Fabric Buttons How-To – Making Fabric Covered Buttons With Your Own Button Maker

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the growing trends in monogramming and embroidery is the use of fabric-covered buttons as an accessory for a number of items, from clothing to purses to shoes. Many small embroidery shops have begun to offer a selection of fabric buttons, including custom monogrammed buttons. With a professional grade button machine, a small embroidery shop can quickly expand its product offering with a fun and versatile fabric button that has a number of uses.

Getting Started by Choosing Your Fabric

One of the most exciting aspects of fabric buttons is choosing the right fabric with which to decorate the button. A trip to the local arts and crafts store is sure to provide a wide array of patterns and designs that can give any fabric button a certain amount of flair.

A number of popular designers offer their patterns as fabrics that can be used for a number of arts and crafts projects. Such popular designers include Lilly Pulitzer and Vera Bradley. With decorative fabric from a popular designer, it is easy to make a trendy fabric button that is sure to impress.

However, some designer fabrics can be somewhat pricey. For a small business looking to produce a large number of fabric buttons in an assortment of colors and patterns, arts and crafts store such as Jo-Ann Fabrics can be a great place to find inexpensive yet stylish patterns.

When choosing fabric, it is important to remember that not every type will work in a button maker. It is a good idea to check the thickness of any material as some materials are too thick for a button maker and others are too thin. This is not a major issue, as most fabrics used in button making are of a relatively similar thickness; however, specialty fabric buttons, using leather for example, will require a button maker that has been calibrated to accommodate the material.

Using a Button Machine to Create Fabric-Covered Buttons

According to Keith Brown, of Dallas-based American Button Machines, “Most button making machines are manufactured to produce pinback buttons using regular printer paper. Fabric is a completely different type of material than paper. It is important to have a button maker calibrated properly to accommodate for the challenges in making a button out of fabric material. Proper calibration ensures the button machine will produce consistent quality buttons throughout its life.

With a little creativity and the right equipment, an embroidery business can expand their offering of fabric-covered buttons and sell a large variety of novelty buttons with a number of different applications. After cutting the fabric to a specific size with a circle cutter, a number of different options such as the type sold by American Button Machines, can be pressed onto the back of the button to make several different products.

A number of different attachments, such as a keychain, zipper pull or cell phone charm can turn any button into a personalized novelty item. This is especially useful for embroidery shops, which can make a personalized fabric button to accessorize any item. There are a number of backs that can be used with a fabric button. While some prefer a pinback to decorate a purse or to wear on clothing, a jacket, or a hat, others might want a more versatile back.

The Many Varied Uses of Fabric-Covered Buttons

Snap-Inz are used to turn a fabric button into a shoe charm to decorate Croc shoes. These charms can be glued to the back of a button and simply snapped into place through the holes on the Croc shoes. Another use for fabric buttons is as a ponytail holder. This can be accomplished with a special button back that has an eyelet to run a ponytail elastic through. Other specialty kits can include button bracelets and necklaces, as well as pacifier clips (paci-clip) and keychains.

“Discerning customers are looking for the latest in quality button making options such as pocket mirrors, ponytail holders, keychains, necklaces, pinback buttons and refrigerator magnets. “said Keith Brown. “Applying a personalized initial monogram to a fabric button is a great way to decorate a favorite item or add personalized flair to a book bag, jacket, purse, or a pair of flip flops.”

Capitalizing on the Opportunity by Owning a Button Machine

While monogrammed fabric buttons are growing in popularity, it can be hard for a small embroidery business to capitalize on the opportunity. Additionally, many production methods are not efficient enough for a small business trying to establish themselves as a provider of fabric buttons. Fabric-covered buttons can be extremely versatile, but most manufacturers do not offer any options for their customers.

Most embroidery shops start slow, perhaps using a Dritz Button Cover Kit or similar type of “hand pressed” button. While Dritz Buttons are good for making a fabric-covered button, the results at times can look a little homemade as they usually do not produce the same quality as a fabric-covered button made on a professional button making machine. Dritz Buttons are good, but were never intended for the high-end production method the monogram industry demands.

While relatively inexpensive to make (with accessories basically non-existent) these fabric “press together” button styles can be challenging to assemble. They rely on an individual’s strength to press the parts together by hand or a hammer. Once all the materials are gathered, they are placed into the press, which is then squeezed together to make a button. There are several limitations to this method. Hand pressing fabric buttons can be difficult to make and uncomfortable for the user. The person making the button must proceed extremely slowly to ensure a quality product. A rushed job can, and often does, result in a button that is not centered and looks bad. Additionally, a press together button is not an efficient button maker, as it takes longer to make a button as compared to using a professional button making machine.

Many production methods are not efficient enough for a small business trying to establish themselves as a provider of fabric buttons. For a business looking to make a large number of fabric buttons, or a variety of covered button types, the old hand-press-together buttons are simply not up to the task of producing a large number of quality buttons quickly. These press together button styles are good for a family or art class making craft buttons but an embroidery shop needing a large number of fabric buttons in a short amount of time would be better suited by using a professional fabric button making machine.”

Many gift shops and resellers simply order fabric-covered buttons from a manufacturer such as Morgan and Company With professional grade equipment, a manufacturer can quickly turn out a large number of buttons; however there are some drawbacks. The price of these fabric buttons can be quite high, as the manufacturer has to mark-up the price of the button to the reseller, who in turn marks it up again to the end customer. Additionally, if a customer wants to personalize a button with an initial monogram, a manufacturer may not be able produce a custom monogram or will charge a high price for the personalized embroidery. To reduce costs and still produce personalized embroidered gifts, many embroidery shops are beginning to purchase their own button making machine.

Making a fabric button is extremely easy using professional equipment. After selecting a particular fabric and completing any embroidery or monogramming, a circle cutter is used to cut out each piece of fabric that will be used in the buttons. Once the other necessary supplies are gathered, a professional button maker can quickly produce a large number of buttons.

It is important to reiterate that a standard button maker must be calibrated properly to accommodate for the challenges in making a button out of fabric material. There are very few “professional” grade button makers available on the market today that will make fabric buttons. One of the simplest and most efficient is a button maker with a rotating die and pull lever.

How To Properly Use A Button Machine to Make Fabric Buttons

In a rotating die button maker, the materials are placed into two separate dies. The button shell and fabric are positioned in the first die, which is rotated into the machine, and the lever is pulled once. The button back is then placed in the second die, which is rotated into the press, and the lever is pulled a second time completing the button press operation.

“We have found that a button maker with a rotating die is the most efficient way to produce buttons in a large number extremely quickly,” said Keith Brown of American Button Machines. “The button parts are loaded directly in front of the operator so they do not have to make time consuming moves to the left and the right to load parts which slows down production. The two dies swivel on a center axis providing speed and accuracy to such levels that these machines are able to produce a button in as little as ten seconds. There are other fabric button machines that are designed to have interchangeable dies. The dies can be swapped out to change sizes quickly and efficiently. While production is not as fast as the rotating die method, these machines produce very high quality, cost effective buttons”.

A fabric button is a great way to personalize any item and to add a unique sense of one’s personal style. With a wide array of fabrics, and a number of different button making options, fabric buttons have a number of uses, such as pocket mirrors, keychains, ponytail holders, pinback buttons, shoe charms, and necklaces. By investing in a professional grade fabric button maker, an embroiderer can easily expand their offering and capitalize on the growing popularity of fabric-covered buttons.

Healthy Crock Pot Recipes With Easy Preparation

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The other day I was looking through my grocer’s weekly sale flyer and I found myself thinking, “The easier the preparation, the worse it is for you.” Think about fast food. No preparation, but completely unhealthy.

I continued my thoughts through meal preparations – frozen TV dinners, frozen pizza, frozen “meal in a bag”, boxed dinners, the list goes on and on. We are so concerned with doing things quickly we are hindering our health by jamming our bodies full of preservatives and things with names too long to state and too difficult to pronounce.

I pictured my grocery store, which wasn’t difficult since I’m usually there at least twice a week. I love my grocer’s produce section, seeing all the fresh fruits and vegetables; I usually spend most of my time there. However, thinking of all the isles that follow, my thoughts were once again confirmed. Packaged food after packaged food – even in the organic isle! I know that cooking with natural ingredients is the best way to go, but how are we to do it if we’re bombarded with packaged, boxed, preserved food?

Thinking about my own cooking, I know that I use more “pre-packaged” items than I probably should. For convenience sake, I often used frozen vegetables and canned tomatoes. I feed my kids boxed macaroni and cheese. However, they don’t eat frozen dinners, ready-made frozen chicken, and we never eat at fast food restaurants.

These thoughts drove me to research my own recipes; were there a handful of crock pot recipes with extremely easy preparation that are healthy? I did find a bunch, and although the recipes with canned soups tend to be higher in sodium, I believe I found a nice balance between easy preparation and health. Plus, every recipe on the list has 10 ingredients or less. You can view these recipes at http://www.natalies-recipes.com/website/easy-healthy-recipes.aspx.

When it comes right down to it, we want to be healthy and feed our families healthy meals. However, our busy lives often take over and prevent us from doing so. I hope that I have offered you some options to avoid the frozen dinners and fast food restaurants and create healthy meals with ease.

Your 6th Wedding Anniversary – 12 Ways to Make it Her Best Ever!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Anniversaries are such special times of the year: a time for reinforcing the ties of love and commitment to one another; to forge stronger bonds that will (hopefully) last a lifetime. The 6th wedding anniversary is no less so.

Love thrives on the little things that are often overlooked once marriage has settled into a regular routine. A lingering good morning kiss gets replaced by a quick peck on the cheek, long drives take a backseat to hurriedly scheduled jaunts to the supermarket or to pick up/ drop the kids…

Be on your guard! Your 6th anniversary is around the corner. Grab the opportunity to dispel any monotony that may have set in. Leave no stone unturned in making this her best wedding anniversary yet!

Let’s start with the basics. The 6th year has the traditional theme of sugar and iron, while wood makes up the contemporary component. The flowers are Calla lilies while the gemstones are garnet and amethyst.

So, what can you do to make your 6th anniversary year super special? Loads of stuff. Read on…

1. Chocolates — but with a difference!

If she has a sweet tooth, she is going to love this anniversary year since it allows you to literally drown her in sweets. Order a specially-designed slab of her favourite dark chocolate and get your own intimate message carved on it. Floor her with delectable designer candy, packaged beautifully in a heart-shaped box.

2. Dessert is on her!

If you want to spice things up in the bedroom, there’s nothing like some lip-smacking chocolate body paint to slather all over your loved one. How you clean the mess afterwards is, of course, entirely up to you!

3. Wrought iron fixtures

Since this is in a way your ‘iron anniversary’, it might be a great idea to splurge on some iron objects. Wrought iron garden furniture, iron candle stands, iron bowls and vases or decorative iron mirrors can rev up even the most ordinary environment. For a really sentimental gift, nothing beats personalised wedding anniversary plates. Have both your names and the wedding year engraved on it.

4. Display your carving skills

No, not turkey, but wood. Take out your carpentry tools and roll up your sleeves. You are going to make a lovely wood carving for her. Don your creative cap and think of some delightfully innovative gifts made of wood — maybe a photo frame, or a simple bowl. It’s the effort that counts!

5. Make her garden grow

If she is into gardening, present her with a beautiful bonsai plant or tree that symbolises a long-lasting marriage.

6. Get original!

Combine two themes in one. Fill an antique wooden box with an assortment of gourmet chocolates. Slip in a love note and place a bunch of graceful Calla lilies on the top.

7. Garnet and amethyst jewellery

Garnet and amethyst rank highly among gemstones for their considerable healing properties and for enhancing mental well-being. So, present the love of your life some stunning garnet and amethyst jewellery — all women love jewellery, especially if their man gives it to them! Why not go for some handcrafted, personalised jewellery — pendants, bracelets, rings or earrings?

8. Classy jewellery boxes and rolls

This is one gift that she probably wouldn’t have anticipated and that’s what makes it so hot! Get her a classy jewellery box in sleek leather or croc finish and slip in a piece of exquisite amethyst or garnet jewellery. All her fine baubles deserve a great resting place, don’t they?

9. Write a poem!

Even if you can’t put rhyme to words, make an attempt — pen a verse just for her. Even better — have your personal poem mounted and framed alongside a montage of her favourite memories.

10. Take pleasure in the simple things of life

All gifts do not have to come across a counter. Some are just there, waiting to be discovered. If you are rushed for time and money (these things do happen), fret not. Have a candlelit dinner at home. Go for a long romantic walk, enjoying the beautiful tapestry of Nature’s colours all around. Give her a long, relaxing massage — no strings attached! Run her bath at night, place lighted candles along the bath tub and float rose petals in the bath water. Offer to rub her back for her. Just make her feel pampered.

11. Surprise her

If your anniversary falls on a week day, and both of you are working professionals, then it is up to you to manage a long lunch break! Surprise her by landing up at her office and whisk her off for an anniversary lunch. But not to a restaurant. If the weather is glorious, have a picnic in a nearby park and just revel in the unexpected outing!

12. Make a movie

Yes, that’s correct. Make your very own movie with either video clips or photographs of the two of you together. Capture different moods, moments, joyous occasions. You could even make one with photographs of all the previous anniversary years, starting from your wedding day.

So that’s it; oodles of romance, some imagination and a little bit of risk. There you have the recipe for a perfect anniversary year celebration. Congratulations!

Oh My Aching Feet! Foot Pain Relief Tips For Pregnant Women

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As a mother of three, I can attest that every pregnancy was unique in its own way, but one constant through them all was “Oh! My aching feet!” and this is from a podiatrist. Let me share with you some of the tricks of the trenches and recommendation from the American Podiatric Medical Association that I learned which helped me survive the pregnancy trauma to my feet. I don’t care if you are a size 2 or 12 when you get pregnant, by the sixth month most woman are complaining of some kind of foot and ankle pain.

As your waistline expands, that weight gain alters your center of gravity and causes lordosis, also known as a sway back posture. This change in posture puts abnormal stress on your knees, legs and feet. The most common ailments seen in pregnant woman are swollen feet (more like feeling like they will explode), over pronation (flattening of your arches), arch fatigue, ingrown toenails, and cramps in your feet. Let’s look at all of these a little closer and discuss the causes and the remedies.

1. Swollen feet: Excess fluid accumulates in your feet due to the weight and position of the baby in the womb. This usually occurs in the third trimester. Tips for prevention of swollen feet include: putting your feet up whenever possible, uncross your legs when sitting, stretch your legs frequently while sitting, wear wide comfortable shoes (Crocs were my favorite), and measure your feet every month and wear the appropriate size shoes. Foot size usually increases at least a half a size per pregnancy and is usually permanent after the first two. When edema is a problem, try waist high maternity pantyhose. These saved my life while I was still working and pregnant. Put them on first thing in the morning so blood doesn’t have a chance to pool around your ankles.

2. Over Pronation: Your arch is flattening and rolling inward while walking due to increased body weight and hormonal ligament laxity. This can cause back, knee and ankle pain as well as chronic arch fatigue. Tips for prevention of excessive pronation include: avoid high heels especially stilettos, and make your running shoes your best friend. Choose comfortable and supportive shoe gear that provide extra support and shock absorption. If this doesn’t cure your pronation, over-the-counter arch supports like Aetrex Lyncos can help support your arch and get you through your pregnancy.

3. Arch Fatigue: Extreme stress or inflammation on the plantar fascia, the ligament that holds up your arch occurs due to excessive pronation and a pre-pregnancy flexible flat foot. Ouch! Your arch is on fire and your heel feels like someone stabbed it hen you get up in the morning. Tips for prevention of plantar fasciitis: stretch before and after any exercise, stretch daily when you get up in the morning, do not go barefoot, and wear supportive low heeled shoes. If this doesn’t alleviate your arch pain, roll a frozen water bottle in your arch twice a day and wear arch supports mentioned above. If this does not do it, you may need physical therapy to decrease your ligament inflammation.

4. Ingrown Toenails: These are caused by excessive stress from ill-fitting shoes. Face it, your feet are expanding and so should your shoes. I wore my Crocs for the last trimester of my pregnancy with everything. Fashion goes out the window and comfort rules! Crocs Rx have enough arch support to help with your arch fatigue and enough room to avoid most ingrown toenails. If your toenail discomfort does not subside with wider shoes, seek your podiatrist. They can help! Remember that a pedicurist can give you an infection, so better left to the professionals.

5. Cramps in your feet: These are caused by increased blood volume during pregnancy and the high progesterone levels which relax your blood vessels to prevent high blood pressure. Relaxed and slack vessels can slow down your circulation. Increased weight in your pelvis can compress the veins reducing circulation to your feet. Tips for prevention of cramps: increase circulation by rotating your ankles and walking your cramps out. Stretch your calves daily make sure you are taking your prenatal vitamins to ward off any electrolyte imbalances, and exercise. A walk around the block can help even if your legs hurt!

While the joys of motherhood may be one of life’s most precious gifts, expectant mothers have to endure the rigors of pregnancy before they can experience baby bliss. Hopefully these tips from the trenches will help you survive your pregnancy as they did mine.
